Ova Vlog 51: What Does Defunding Planned Parenthood Mean?

Everyday Ova works to ensure that people have access to quality intimate health products and services. We want everyone to be able to access the intimate health care they need to thrive. For this reason, we are adamantly against the current attempt to defund Planned Parenthood. We aren’t here to try to convince you that abortion is right or wrong. We respect your beliefs. But defunding Planned Parenthood negatively impacts the health care options of millions of people, which we believe will ultimately lead to an increase in unintended pregnancies, a reduction in STI screenings and other preventative care services.

Here are five things Ova wants you to know about defunding Planned Parenthood:

  1. The federal funding received by Planned Parenthood is used for contraceptive services and preventative health care.
  2. Under the Hyde Amendment federal funding cannot be used for abortions services. The only exceptions to this are in cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother.
  3. 1 in 5 women use Planned Parenthood in their lifetime.
  4. There are many reasons individuals receive care at Planned Parenthood instead of other clinics. There are still around 30 million people without insurance in our country and Planned Parenthood is one of the few low cost reproductive and sexual healthcare options for the uninsured. For low income people who live in one of the 20 states that did not expand Medicaid, Planned Parenthood may be their only option for receiving birth control, Pap smears, breast exams and STI screenings. For those who are insured but can’t afford co-pays, Planned Parenthood maybe their only option for getting birth control since private clinics often charge co-pays for birth control related visits and Planned Parenthood does not. There are many other reasons individuals seek care at Planned Parenthood such as quality of care and anonymity.
  5. Each year over 500,000 unintended pregnancies are prevented because of Planned Parenthood services.

One action you can take today to help stop the defunding of Planned Parenthood is to call your representatives. If you live in Maine, Kentucky or Arkansas, this is incredibly important because representatives Susan Collins, Rand Paul and Tom Cotton are Republicans who are on the fence about defunding Planned Parenthood.
